In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us anything about the photo shown above, use this form. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send to us.
This is a photograph of Charles Norton, Jr. He appears to be standing outside his family’s business on the McDonough Square, Gasses Department Store. Kamilah Johnson wrote, “This photo shows the movie theater, feed store, 10 cent store and Gasses Department store on Macon St. when leaving town, according to my Uncle Larry Stalls.”
This is my great grandparents Gamaliel Milton (Mit) McGarity and Beattris (Bea) Heath McGarity
They had nine children all born in Henry County between 1872 and 1899. The house and farm were about 4 miles southeast of McDonough on McGarity Rd. The house is still occupied today. It is now painted white and sits on the right before the intersection of McGarity and Bethany Rd. My father, M.J. Upchurch was born there in 1911.
The nine McGarity children are Mollie Adela, Lucy Vera, Harvey Wilson, Homer Seaborn, Howard Ector, John Dow, Nora Bell, Lizzie Angie (my grandmother) and William Joseph. I believe the others are the wives and children of the 2 eldest sons
I am a decedent of Homer Seaborn MCGarity. My family also has a copy of this picture.
