Henry County As It Was

In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us anything about the photo shown above, use this form. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send us.

Buddy Upchurch wrote, “This is Gov. Lester Maddox who came to participate in the Henry County Sesquicentennial (1971). He is being jailed for some infraction. Most likely for not growing a beard, which was expected of the men who were participating and wearing period clothing. Note: In 1971 only Hippies and Communists wore beards. So it was real unusual seeing the pillars of the community letting their whiskers grow.” Thanks to Chuck Kimbell, Rusty Dobbs, Henry Wentz and Penny Brown for correctly identifying former Governor Lester Maddox.
