Voters in one Henry County Board of Commissioners district have an election right around the corner.

Early voting begins May 24 in the special election to fill the District 3 seat on the board for the remainder of the term vacated by the death of Gary Barham. Election Day is June 15.

The Elections & Voter Registration main office at 40 Atlanta Street in McDonough will be the only early voting site for this election. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays for the weeks of May 24-28 and June 1-4 (no voting May 31 due to the Memorial Day holiday). Saturday voting is available June 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and polls will be open 7 a.m-7 p.m. the week of June 7-11.

Voters who wait until election day can only vote at their respective polling places. For this election, those include East Lake, Hickory Flat, Lake Dow, Lake Haven, McDonough, McDonough Central, McMullen, Mt Bethel, Timberridge, Wesley Lakes, and Westside.

The Henry County Board of Elections announced three precinct location changes solely for the special election. The polling place for the Wesley Lakes precinct will be Wesley Lakes Elementary School, while McMullen voters will go to Ola Elementary School and East Lake voters cast ballots at East Lake Elementary School.

Three candidates completed the qualifying process and will be on the ballot. Two are Democrats: Briana Clay and Sarita Dyer. The lone Republican is Greg Cannon, who is currently serving as interim commissioner after being appointed by board chair Carlotta Harrell upon Barham’s death.

The winner of the special election will serve until the end of 2022. A regular election for the next four-year term will take place in November of that year.
