The Henry County Board of Commissioners deliberated for the second straight month about the proposed I-75 interchange at Bethlehem Road in Locust Grove, and for the second straight month there was no progress.
A February 2 vote on a memorandum of understanding with the Georgia Department of Transportation failed to pass due to a tie. The state DOT requested $5 million from the county for preliminary engineering and right of way on the project, which is part of the county’s overall SPLOST program approved by voters.
Dee Clemmons, Bruce Holmes and Vivian Thomas voted against a motion to table the measure. Clemmons then made a motion to approve the MOU with a number of conditions, but later rescinded it and no vote was taken.
An unrelated item at the same meeting had the same outcome. This one was a proposal to change the terms of service for members of the Henry County Board of Tax Assessors, as a resolution was presented that would have reduced each term from six years to three.
Gary Barham, Johnny Wilson and commission chair Carlotta Harrell voted in opposition. A separate motion to appoint Calvin Gleaton to the Board of Tax Assessors for a term to be determined failed along the exact same voting lines.
Two new members were appointed to the Henry County Department of Family and Children Services board. Timothy McBride was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Spencer O’Neal through January 3, 2022. Monica McIntyre Herron was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Robert Head through June 30, 2023. Both appointments were confirmed with unanimous votes. The commissioners appointed Melissa Kornegay to the Henry First, Inc. board to serve until the end of 2022.
The board voted to abandon a portion of Feucht Road, on the north side of Jodeco Road only a few hundred yards west of I-75. The road was declared surplus, and in a separate action the board voted to authorize the sale of the land in question, which totaled about three-fourths of an acre. Both votes were 5-1 with Johnny Wilson in opposition.
The commissioners approved the nominations of six people for two seats on the Hospital Authority board: Dr. Kenneth Collins, attorney Natosha Reid Rice and Dr. Michelle Nichols in District 4; and Rodney Bowler, Hans Broder and incumbent Joyce Rodgers in District 3. The votes were unanimous.
I believe the no votes on the Bethlehem Interchange need an explanation from the Commissioners.
