A former Henry County pastor is being honored by local government officials.
The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its February 2 regular meeting to approved a name change for a section of Red Oak Road in Stockbridge. The portion between Flippen Road and Rock Quarry Road will become Spencer T. O’Neal Road in memory of the late pastor of Global Impact Christian Ministries, whose campus is located there. O’Neal died January 11.
The vote by the commissioners was unanimous. Approval is contingent upon a public hearing at the board’s March 2 meeting so that property owners who would be affected by the decision can be heard from.
In other business, the board approved three separate measures involving the reallocation of SPLOST money. One resolution divides $484,000 among all five commission districts, while another redistributes $337,000 from completed projects in districts 1 and 3. All of that money is for road and intersection improvements. A separate resolution moves $285,000 to various commission districts for capital projects.
An intergovernmental agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation will pave the way for the installation of connected vehicle technology at 20 road intersections across the county. The total cost to the county will be $33,200 through an 80-20 split, with federal funds covering the bulk of the cost.
The state is doing this work at 1,000 intersections in the Atlanta region this year, and the 20 in Henry County were recommended by the fire department. When implemented, the new technology will allow a traffic signal to give priority to emergency vehicles and transit buses to pass through intersections.
Members of the Henry County Development Authority board are getting a boost in pay. A resolution approved by the Board of Commissioners will increase the monthly compensation of the HCDA chair (from $250 to $600), the vice chair and secretary ($225 to $450), as well as the other board members ($200 to $400).
HCDA attorney Rod Meadows informed the commissioners that the board members’ workload has increased significantly while their compensation has remained unchanged since 2002. He added that the Development Authority has brought more than $1.2 billion in investment to the county over the past five years.
Street light districts for six subdivisions were approved by the commissioners, as well as a $58,896 expenditure for design services regarding a project at Knight Drive.
I am against the renaming of this road. I am a 4th generation member of Red Oak United Methodist church.
