Military veterans can take home a furry companion at no charge now that Henry County Animal Care and Control is offering free pet adoptions to those who have served in the US military.

Veterans will only need to have a valid military identification card or a certificate of release or discharge from active military duty to adopt a pet at the county’s Animal Care and Control shelter.

District III Commissioner Gary Barham, who requested fees be waived for veterans through a resolution that was approved at the last BOC meeting, said he proposed the free pet adoptions for veterans after hearing from several veterans in the community.

“I know many veterans who adopt pets from shelters and I thought this would be a great way to give back to our veterans and help find forever homes for the dogs and cats that are in our animal shelter,” said Barham. Come see what Animal Care and Control has to offer and fall for your newest furry family member.
