Art Walk McDonough to be held Saturday

Main Street McDonough will be hosting their first Art Walk McDonough event on Saturday, July 25, starting at 10 a.m. on the McDonough Square.

Participants will be provided with an official Art Walk McDonough printed guide from the City of McDonough Welcome Center.

The 1.5 mile self-guided walking tour will begin at the Welcome Center and will feature 15 murals, models, and artworks by both local and national artists.

Artist Melissa Burgoyne’s Luna Moth is just one of the murals featured on the Art Walk McDonough guide.

The tour will end at the Hood Street Gallery where Art Walk McDonough participants will receive an “I Walked the Walk” magnet to commemorate their journey.

For a chance to be featured on Main Street McDonough’s social media, participants should include #ArtWalkMcDonough when posting photos of the tour.

With their inaugural Art Walk, Main Street McDonough chose to feature artwork located outside in order to allow for social distancing between participants.

“Although social distancing guidelines have impacted our ability to host events, Art Walk McDonough has been designed with the goal of providing community members with a fun and safe activity to enjoy,” explained Main Street Manager Cinderella Bennett.

While the goal of the Art Walk is to showcase the artwork throughout downtown McDonough as well as to provide a safe event for the public to enjoy, Main Street McDonough also encourages participants to visit businesses on the Square.

“In addition to giving the community something to do and still be safe with the social distancing, this will benefit merchants as well,” said Bennett. “We are asking [participants] to spend some time with the merchants, to stop and get something to drink, as long as they want to. [The merchants] really need it at this point.”

In about a year, Main Street McDonough will change the Art Walk to feature different artists and artwork.

“We plan to continue on from here and, in a year, include additional art. The community can look forward to new artists and art in the future,” said Bennett.

For those unable to attend the inaugural Art Walk on Saturday, July 25, Main Street McDonough will have Art Walk McDonough printed guides at the City of McDonough Welcome Center for community members to take the tour at an alternate time.
