The City of McDonough is again teaming up with the McDonough Lions Club to provide free produce to local residents.
The second Farmers to Families Food Box Distribution is set for July 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of McDonough High School, 100 Postmaster Drive.
Food will be available on a limited basis, with one box allowed per family while supplies last.
Residents in attendance will drive up to a station where a volunteer will load a box directly into their vehicle, said City of McDonough spokesperson, Trisha Colpetzer.
“The approximately 20-pound box will contain locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables,” she said. “It is expected that there will be a total of 1,920 boxes distributed during this event, containing produce items such as carrots, sweet potatoes, green cabbage, lettuce, lemons, yellow squash, apples, oranges, etc.”
Items to be included at the giveaway will depend on their availability, said Colpetzer.
The event comes on the heels of the inaugural giveaway, held last month. McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland thanked the Lions Club for its continued support of the giveaway.
“The McDonough Lions Club has a long-standing history of service to our community and, due to their dedication and persistence, we are blessed with the opportunity to provide free local produce to our citizens for a second time,” said Copeland.
To serve as a volunteer for the event, call Beverly Coley at 770-689-6509, or e-mail her at tinglin51@yahoo.com. Volunteers must wear a mask and gloves, must use hand sanitizer as needed, and must comply with social distancing guidelines. A mask and gloves will be provided for any volunteer who does not already have them.
