The good, the bad and the ugly

There’s a lot of good in this country and of course in our lovely town and state. I was pleased to hear about people doing a run to raise money for a family who lost their home plus their son in a fire in Flovilla. I loved to hear how Henry county came together to help after the loss of one our police officers too. I’m also glad that my church, Mt. Bethel, keeps bringing in donations to help the needy and some of our kind ladies reach out to a local children’s home too. There are a lot more good things going on in Henry County, Georgia. I enjoy seeing how officers of the law reach out to assist those in need and firefighters made a little boy’s life a lot brighter before he had to take off to heaven.

Sad to say there’s a bit more bad and ugly than there used to be and part of it makes me reluctant to even answer the phone. Last week I got a second call from another young man who called me grandmother and asked for financial assistance in an emergency.I didn’t recognize his voice and my grands don’t call me ‘grandmother’ either. So, I hung up on him. Maybe I should have given him a little counseling?

Another caller advised me that they would be debiting my checking account for $399 as a renewal and gave me an 800 number to call if I had any questions. This is the second time this call has come in so I just hung up. This morning a kind soul told me they had received my request to work on-line and needed me to give them some more information so we could accomplish my request. Again I just hung up and didn’t even dispute the call I had NOT made! And, no, I did not request a free hearing test nor did I leave my name and number so I could get a pre-paid funeral and burial plan either. Interesting that when I pick up the phone, I often see a local area code and have heard that there is a way callers can fake that too. I am on the National Do Not Call Registry but those who wish to cheat have found a way to get around that, sadly. I do get a daily call from our president, but it has the proper area code and no, Donald Trump, I am NOT going to make a contribution to help pay for your campaign.

Another frequent fraud call advises me that the warranty on my vehicle is about to expire and how they can renew it for me. Well, it is a 2005 and the warranty was gone when I bought it in 2012. I did sign up for a different type of product that would cover the engine, transmission and AC but that expired after three years. I’m guessing those placing the random calls must be drawing in customers or they wouldn’t keep reaching out to the general public so much. Well, that’s the bad and the ugly, so will talk some more about the good in this world.

I have a great hairdresser/friend too. She even came to my home after I broke my arm so I could get a haircut Another kind soul cuts our grass and trims the hedges Last week when he came, he noticed limbs hanging down very low from a neighbor’s tree, so he lopped them off to protect our home. Of course, I love Publix being so close by, and always wonder if my Mom sent them her recipes for slaw, potato salad and fried chicken. Their staff is cordial and professional; but I find that all over Henry County! It must be something in the water.
