My heroes

I have tremendous respect and admiration for our police, EMTs, firefighters, military and power company linemen. They step up to the plate without any hesitation and keep us all safe. I also respect school teachers, college professors and bus drivers. I admire those who drive semis and make sure America has food and other necessities of life. I’m sure that must be a tough job, but it certainly helps everyone!

And, you know, I admire all of our medical angels and the hard work they do to keep us alive and get us back on our feet. We couldn’t exist without their talents and attention. This includes nurses, doctors and those behind the scenes who are always there when we need them. I respect our pharmacists, mechanics, and anyone who knows how to fix appliances and keep our homes safe and warm too. We are VERY blessed in America!

I know lots of other hardworking souls I admire, but I want to call out those who keep teaching me and entertaining me as I go about my daily chores and routine – and that’s the great DJs I listen to, in my car and at home. They always teach me something and keep me up to date on the latest news, weather, and activities going on around me. I like listening to their voices too. At my online job, I always listened to potential new hires to make sure I could understand them well, because we talk to each other a lot as we update and correct online listings. I can usually tell if someone has a military background too. I like the DJs voices, and I love hearing about their families. I hated to hear that Alfie was departing from WJGA after 19 years! I admired him and his wife for adopting two children. Then we get a new DJ, Todd, and he and his wife have adopted five! That is truly awesome. He filled in this week so our Saturday gospel DJ, Chad, could finish his honeymoon, and he chose a wide variety of Christian music, some I’d never heard, but liked. I’m glad Mount Bethel introduced me to gospel and we just keep finding new versions of His word via music. I’m so thankful for a blessed Saturday morning via WJGA.

I enjoy listening to Tom’s Boston accent, and also like to hear Rob (who is also an officer of the law) on Sunday afternoons. They all play some of my favorites plus keep me informed on the weather. I find it interesting that the weather alerts can take over WJGA and also the alert of a missing person is automatically played on the air. I’m thinking the DJs can’t do anything about that and it is very important that we are made aware of these emergencies.

I love to see car shows on their Facebook page, plus parades and festivals. I haven’t been able to go to the Geranium Festival lately but WJGA airs the various displays and the food on the Square. My grandson, Tyler, did bring me a plate of awesome fried veggies last time. It’s neat that I can see the new businesses in Jackson too, and some of their grand openings, via WJGA on Facebook.

I made another great discovery from 92.1. I heard DJ Don saying Moye’s drugstore in Jackson was selling the book “History of Butts County Georgia.” It sounded like something I’d want to read so I took off to Jackson. I didn’t know where the store was so I pulled off the street in town and called WJGA and, of course, Tom knew exactly where I needed to go. I purchased the HUGE tome and headed back home to enjoy my latest read. (I have since learned that McDon-ough’s Brown House has them too), PTL!

Beverly Wittler has four children, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She lives in McD onough with her husband.
