KirbyG’s Diner & Pub in McDonough was named the 2018 World Burger at the World Food Championships (WFC), held November 5-11 in Orange Beach, Ala. The top 40 competitors in the world vie for supremacy in 15 categories. “Every competitor who competes has to win some event somewhere to get to WFC,” said KirbyG’s co-owner Neil Daniell.
“There are two rounds. The first round consists of a signature dish and a structured dish. The structured build is whatever WFC designates, and the signature dish is whatever we want to create. The top 10 competitors from the first round go on to compete head to head for the title of their category.” Daniell said, “In 2016 KirbyG’s placed in the top 10 after the first burger but we knocked ourselves out with a couple technical errors on the second burger. So, we felt like we could make the final top ten round if we executed correctly. This year, the results paid off. We made the final round and won with a very decisive third burger – a Chunky Guacamole Burger with Slap Ya Mama Candied Bacon.”
