Free tax return preparation services with free e-filing is available to seniors and those with low income at several AARP sites, in Fairview, Jonesboro and McDonough, from February 3 through April 13.
Please note that with last year’s tax changes, there are many who did not need to file at all, and many who had itemized in the past did not need to do so. The same is true for 2019.
Fairview: Open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview Recreation Center, located at 35 Austin Road in Stockbridge, beginning on February 6.
Jonesboro: Open on Fridays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Charley Griswell Senior Center, located at 2300 Hwy. 138 E in Jonesboro, beginning on February 7.
Appointments are necessary at the Fairview and Jonesboro locations. Call Linda Holcomb at 770-412-2940 to make arrangements. Appointment slots are mostly filled already.
McDonough: Open every Monday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the old building of the McDonough Assembly of God, 438 Hwy. 42 N, beginning on February 3.
No appointments need to be made for the McDonough location. Clients will be seen in the order of arrival. It is not necessary to arrive at the church before 8 a.m. Please do not call the church, as they are not affiliated with the tax preparation service program.
When you come for preparation, bring the following documents: your 2018 tax return; picture ID’s and Social Security numbers for self, spouse, and any dependents; W-2’s; SSA 1099’s; 1099R’s; 1099 INT’s; 1099 DIV’s; 1099G’s, stock reports that show all sources of income. If you had insurance through the Marketplace, bring the 1095 form. You should not come to the above locations until you are positive that you have received all of your documents.
If you are itemizing, bring receipts or clear documentation about medical expenses, insurance premiums, mortgage interest, property tax, donations, etc. Please total your receipts before you come. Since the standard deduction almost doubled in 2018, these will have to be very large deductions.
