Stockbridge Mayor Anthony S. Ford and the Henry-Clayton Section of the National Council of Negro Women (HC-NCNW) will host a diabetes education and awareness event on Saturday, November 10 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Merle Manders Conference Center, 111 Davis Road in Stockbridge.
Diabetes experts will conduct presentations, testing and foot exams during the event. Additional services available will include flu shots (at a cost), blood pressure checks, healthy eating demonstrations and other wellness activities.
“The Henry-Clayton Section of NCNW is committed to serving our community in ways that improve the quality of life for our neighbors,” said Diane D. Miller, President of HC-NCNW. “This Diabetes Forum will provide much needed education, testing and awareness for those with diabetes or those at risk. We are planning to make this an annual event. And we greatly appreciate Mayor Ford and the Stockbridge City Council’s support.”
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the Georgia Department of Health, more than 1 in 10 adults in Georgia have diabetes which represents more than a million people. Several hundred thousand more Georgians have pre-diabetes, a condition that can be prevented from developing into full diabetes through weight loss, increased physical activity, and better nutrition. Diagnosed cases of diabetes in the state increased 43% between 2000 and 2010 and continue to rise. Diabetes is a chronic disease that, when not treated, could lead to loss of vision, kidney failure and other serious health issues.
This event is free and open to the public. All are welcomed to attend. For information about joining the Henry-Clayton Section of NCNW visit https://henryclaytonncnw.org/
