Sew Comfy, a group from McDonough Presbyterian Church, makes heart-shaped pillows specifically designed to provide comfort to women who have recently had mastectomy surgery. The group keeps Venteria Knight, the cancer navigator at Piedmont Henry Hospital, fully stocked with pillows so that every woman who has surgery for breast cancer at the hospital receives a pillow.

  “The pillows are very popular because they provide comfort, act as a cushion between the seat belt and a woman’s chest in the car, and also help at night because post-surgical patients can’t sleep on their side after surgery,” said Knight. “They also love the vibrant colors and designs.”

  Sew Comfy has been making these pillows since 2013 and group organizers estimate that they have made approximately 1,400 pillows since forming. The group meets nine times a year and has a mix of members with sewing knowledge and others who are willing to help out any way they can. The American Cancer Society states that one in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime and many of the members of Sew Comfy have friends or family members who have been affected by the disease.

  “We receive letters all the time from patients, thanking us for making the pillows and for thinking of them during a difficult time in their lives,” said Debra Brown, one of the leaders of the group. “It is heart-warming to know that women in the area receive these gifts and feel a measure of comfort.”
