Mother and daughter duo, Cindy and Amanda Spear, love giving back to their local community and have been doing so for the last four years by collecting socks and used clothing for the homeless in the Southern Crescent community.

“When we started Socksgiving in 2015, it went extremely well,” said Amanda. “We had over 1,500 pairs of socks donated and we also got lots of used clothing items, shoes, and mens suits.”

Why socks, you may ask? Well, according to Amanda, socks are the most needed and least donated items for the homeless. Such a need for socks has been expressed when Amanda has handed out items to the homeless in years past.

“I see lots of joy from people that receive the socks and other items,” said Amanda. “I get a lot of ‘thank yous’ and ‘people don’t think of me or give me these things very often.’”

Going on now through November 30, Socksgiving 2019 will take place in the local community. Socksgiving does not take place in a specific location. Rather, Amanda and Cindy run around collecting donations from various locations.

“I do this every year because I feel like this is a small way for me to give back to my community,” said Amanda. “There is such a large population of homeless individuals and they are a group that some people may forget about during this time of year.”

With the items donated, Amanda and Cindy create boxes to give to local facilities or ziplock bags with multiple items to hand out individually. Amanda and Cindy find that gathering and packing the donated items has brought them closer over the years.

“As children grow up, the parent/child relationship changes,” said Cindy.’Socksgiving’ is the first project I shared with my grown-up daughter.”

“I think we both enjoyed the experience, because we’ve repeated it several times,” said Cindy. “It is an extra blessing that through this effort, we help others.”

Donations will be given to the Atlanta Mission and other locations,  and at a ‘weekend on the streets,’ where Amanda and Cindy will hand out individual bags to the homeless all over the Atlanta area.

For those that would like to donate, the most needed items are socks, gently used clothes, feminine hygiene products, individually wrapped snacks, bottled water, toothbrush/toothpaste, and travel deodorants.

Donations can be delivered or picked up by calling Amanda Spear at 404-769-3858 or by sending an email to socksgiving2019@gmail.com.

If you would like to become a volunteer to help package items or to deliver the packaged items, please contact Amanda Spear at 404-769-3858.
