For funeral-home co-owner Greg Cannon, giving back to the community in Henry County is just as important as helping families cope in their time of grief. He said an upcoming celebration exemplifies his desire to be “more than just a funeral director.”
“We want to be more than a facility of grief and disposing of a body,” said Cannon. “That’s the reason we do the other things that we do. I think it’s important that we’re more a part of this community.”
Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors, at 2580 Ga. Highway 42 in McDonough, will celebrate its 20th anniversary October 20, from 2-4 p.m. The event will feature an open-house theme and will include a dedication ceremony, children’s activities and light refreshments.
“When we opened this facility in October of 2000, we had a ceremony to dedicate our services and our facility to this community,” said Greg Cannon, a co-owner of the funeral home with Peter Thornton. “Now, in our 20th year, we want to do that again.”
Cannon said the celebration will enable him to interact with local residents in happier circumstances than they might see otherwise.
“If somebody has a death or a funeral service, very often they don’t see the funeral director until the next time there’s a death,” said Cannon. “Having this event allows us the opportunity to just give back to the community in appreciation of the way that they’ve embraced us, and have allowed us to take care of them at drastic times in their lives.”
The funeral home was launched in 1999 and moved to its current location the following year. Since then, the funeral home has served more than 5,000 families in their time of grief. However, Cannon said the facility has hosted additional events for the community, including art shows, fundraisers and blood drives.
The funeral home has also undergone a great deal of remodeling in recent months with new paint, flooring and other enhancements. Those changes, said Cannon, were made in order for his staff to better serve families in need.
