Internet addictions

Yep, I have a few of those. Of course I check my facebook page every morning after I finish the AJC’s crossword puzzle and read the comics. After wishing friends and family a happy birthday via social media, and reading the latest Henry county happenings, I log out and then head over to my morning e-mail. First I read God’s Minute, a devotional with scripture and then I’ll take surveys that earn me points which I can eventually cash in for a dining card. Next I’ll take some trivia tests, and then after I log out, I go to another site and play solitaire.

I love going to our tax assessor’s site and checking when a certain home was built and how many square feet, along with the current value plus original sales price. It is an interesting site and I was SO miffed when it couldn’t be reached while Henry County suffered a cyber problem that lasted for several weeks. That’s the down side of the internet. It can have problems, get hacked, and be unavailable at times and evidently there’s no way to prevent these incidents. I still recall getting paper statements on all our accounts, and of course I always mailed a check about ten days before the due date. Now I write down the due date on the envelope, file it in my little box and then pay it online, or in some cases, I just call the 800 number on the bill. The computer voice tells me they’ve verified my account via the phone number and then asks me for one more identification before I’m allowed to make my payment. I’m also glad that the computer I’m chatting with reports they can use my checking account and then repeats the last four numbers before going ahead with the transaction. That does save me from buying so many stamps, plus I don’t have to write a check, more savings for our ecology.

Know I’ve told about writing articles for the high school newspaper, and then later for a couple of magazines. Of course I typed them, then put them in the mail. Now I can just e-mail my finished words to The Henry County Times, after I’ve checked my spelling and grammar! When I used to type them, I’d study each sentence as I finished, and then if there was an error, use some white out.

I was working the crossword puzzle in The Week, and couldn’t solve it completely, so I just got on the internet and in no time I discovered the missing answer. I enjoy getting daily e-mails from Web MD that give information about the latest medical issues and cures. I also enjoy my Reader’s Digest daily page of new information and ideas plus funny jokes and neat puns. Aging Care notifies me of the latest caregiver ideas and how to keep that smile going.

Per Publisher’s Clearing House, I can become a millionaire just by using their ‘search’ page. Of course I search for favorite vehicles, and check on towns in distress as our weather threatens the coast. So far I haven’t become a rich lady but I did get a $5 check from them last month. Of course I’m happy with my wonderful family, church and friends plus a little brick ranch and an adequate vehicle. I’m very grateful for the expertise all my grandkids have with computers, phones and the internet. If I have a problem, I just call my tech savvy grandson and he tells me how to fix it.

Lastly, on September 11, I loved  watching Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning” video and saw it had over 6 million views.  Thanks God, for this gift!
