Henry County graduates last year saw their average SAT scores dip slightly from the previous year while remaining very close to the most recent five-year average, according to data released last week by the school system.
The ACT is a national college entrance exam with subject area tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. It is accepted at all four-year colleges and universities in the United States.
Out of 1,743 seniors in Henry County public schools who took the exam last year, the average composite score was 19.4. This represents a 0.4 point drop compared to the 2017 composite score of 19.8. The district’s average composite score over the past five years has been 19.8.
A perfect score on the ACT is 36. According to the Princeton Review, the average nationwide composite score for the class of 2017 was 21.0.
Of high schools showing improvement in tested areas, Stockbridge was the only school to see increases in each subject area as well as the composite score. Union Grove saw increases to English, reading, science, and composite scores. Ola saw improvement in English, math, science, and composite scores.
The remaining high schools in the district saw decreases to their composite scores by an average of 0.7 points.
The district’s English scores saw a slight dip from a score of 19 in 2017. In 2018, the district English score stands at 18.6. The schools realizing a small decrease in the score saw a drop by an average of 0.6 points. The three schools increasing their scores did so by an average of 0.4 points. Stockbridge had the greatest gain in this area, from a 16.9 to a 17.5 in one year.
Math scores saw a decline from 19.3 points in 2017 to 18.9 points in 2018. Seven schools saw their math scores drop by an average of 0.5 points. Ola had the greatest gain in math this year with an increase of 0.5 points, while Stockbridge saw an increase of 0.4 points over last year.
Stockbridge saw the greatest gain in reading with an increase of 1.0 point. Union Grove’s score improved by 0.2 points. Reading scores were down slightly for the remaining eight high schools by an average of 0.8 points. This was the largest decrease for any subject area measured.
In science, Stockbridge’s score improved by 0.5 points, the largest increase of any school. Union Grove and Ola saw their scores increase by 0.3 and 0.1 points, respectively. However, there was an average decline of 0.6 points for seven scores in the district.
