Henry County As It Was

In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us about the photo shown above, us using this form and tell us. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send us.

Thanks to Carl James for bringing this photo to our office. Carl told us that this is a bridge over Walnut Creek on North Ola Road taken in 1988. Sunny Copelan wrote, “This week’s picture is the old N. Ola Road wood trestle bridge over Walnut Creek. Living on N. Ola I drove over it hundreds or thousands of times. The flood in ‘96 (I think) washed it out and N. Ola was a dead end road for 1-2 years.” Amy Mussell wrote, “I’m pretty sure this is the old bridge on North Ola Road. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it like this but this is down the road from our house. I remember going over this bridge many time as we would drive to Lake Jackson. The creaky old bridge always gave me and my brother a good scare … which we enjoyed thoroughly! Innocent entertainment as kids in rural Henry County so many years ago.” Byron Ahrens wrote, “The truck appears to be a 1961 Chevy and I think the bridge might be Eastlake Road/North Ola Road.”

I think that’s the southern saw works foundry that evolved into Snapper Power Equipment. The roof and trusses are still there in the present building.
