Veterans Support Group opens new McDonough office

Local military veterans now have a new venue in Henry County to help them get the help they need.

The McDonough-based Veterans Support Group, a 501(c)(3) veteran resource organization, recently opened its new facility at 32 Jonesboro St. The organization’s mission is to provide free assistance to veterans of all branches of service, their surviving spouse, and dependent children.

Veterans Support Group Chief Operating Officer, Jim Dunn, said the needs of veterans in the area have remained high since opening four years ago. He said his group’s new facility will enable former military personnel to get the help they need.

“We do anything we can for a veteran,” said Dunn. “We prepare paperwork to help them file a claim or get into the VA medical system. We’ll try and help them find housing if we can. We’re here to answer any questions a veteran might have. We help widows of veterans to get their benefits, and help them through the process of what to do after their spouse passes away. We help them get anything they need right after the fact, also.”Dunn said the group achieved nonprofit status in 2014 and, to date, has helped more than 400 military veterans – in Henry County and surrounding areas – in several ways.

Bob Van Dunk is the chief executive officer of the Veterans Support Group. He said the new office will allow the organization to reach a wider audience.

“Now that the VHSC is open, VSG is prepared to service as many as 500-1,000 veterans, spouses, and dependent children in Henry County and surrounding communities,” said Van Dunk.

The group’s hours of operations are from 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday appointments are scheduled on a case-by-case basis.   For more information, call 770-284-3306, or visit www.vetsg.org or www.vetsgfacebook.com.

My dad is a 2time Vietnam Vet and is suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s and I was wondering what kind of help is offered for a situation like this bc my mom is trying so hard to keep him at home until he passes, we don’t want him to have to go in a nursing home as the disease progresses. Please let me know if there is any assistance for him and my mom bc she is 73 herself, he is 78 and she n myself are all he’s got.
