A local youth is doing his part this month to help military veterans in need.
A Fundraising Carnival is set for June 29 at 3-6 p.m., at Union Grove Middle School, 210 East Lake Road in McDonough.
The event is organized by the nonprofit Deuce Hands, Inc., on behalf of the local Veterans Support Group (VSG). It will feature games, vendors, children’s activities, a magician, and arts and crafts.
Admission is free for the carnival. Game tickets will be available at a rate of four for a dollar, or $25 for unlimited games.
VSG recently received a donation of 100 toiletry kits from the charity’s 12-year-old founder, Marlon Miller, who collected the kits to promote good hygiene for homeless veterans.
VSG spokesperson Candace Baker commended Miller and his organization for their efforts.
“Through the services and donations from Deuce Hands, Inc., the mission is to enrich the lives of individuals facing adversity and promote self-sufficiency,” said Baker. “This year Marlon wanted to include veterans in his mission and chose VSG to donate supplies collected by his organization.
“Marlon, his mother Tawanda, and little sister Miranda delivered the kits to our facility on April 30 after school,” continued Baker. “His mission: ‘to give back to the community by helping the homeless and less fortunate by providing them with basic need essentials as well as resources to supportive services.’”
In response to the donation, Miller received a Challenge Coin from VSG founder, Bob Van Dunk. The coin is given exclusively to individuals or organizations that support the VSG’s mission.
“We believe the community of veterans would salute this young man for the hard work he is doing for those who serve,” said Baker. “VSG is asking all of our supporters to come out and support this awesome young man in his mission to help the homeless in Henry County.”
Baker added that Miller has pledged to donate a portion of the carnival’s proceeds to the VSG.
