Trivia

I still love to learn new things and I have started receiving daily e-mails about trivia. Some of it is Bible related and I frequently nail that little quiz.  But the other ones are not for me to ace but to teach me something new. For instance, the Italian word for faithful is – Fido, how neat!  I never had a dog with that name though we did have a Spot, Lucky and Bullet. The next interesting bit of trivia that catches my attention is on the radio, when the DJ revealed that Oreos were introduced March 6, 1912 which means they are now 106 years old! When I was growing up we never had store bought cookies so I didn’t know those were around until I became an adult shopper. It is interesting to know Oreos have been around that long and people still love those delicious treats. I must confess that I eat one a day, but the thin ones are a little closer to my strict diet. Another form of trivia I enjoy is learning more about automobiles.  I learned to drive on a straight shift car and that 1939 Chevrolet had a starter on the floor and a choke on the dash that would increase the engine’s power. I still remember pulling out the vents to let in some cool air in the summer time and several of my own cars came with that substitute for air conditioning. Now I feel a little weird just letting down my window when it’s a tad warm and I don’t want to make the Camry increase her gas usage, but it works. Now that’s some car trivia I didn’t have to look up as I experienced it, and enjoyed it too.

I recently saw a neat motorhome parked next to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and just had to take a slow walk around the Phaeton Tiffin RV. I came home and did some research for more trivia and it turns out the first RV was built in 1910. But that one was just a vehicle with a place to sleep built onto the back. The RV I saw at the PAC is slightly over 1100 square feet, plus has central heal and air and indoor plumbing. I didn’t find out how many miles per gallon it gets, but it had an automatic transmission and holds 100 gallons of gas. I noticed the motorhome owners had a plush Cadillac parked next to it though. That RV costs $490,000 new. A few hours later another camper was parked nearby but a much smaller version. I noticed it had a map of the United States attached to the side and most of the bottom half of the good old USA had stickers showing the owners had visited there. This sounds like an interesting life, but I think I prefer my little brick ranch, for now.   I have some trivia of mine about our annual spring-forward too.  One year our amazing pianist forgot to set her clock and she didn’t make it to church. Well, I can play, but mostly by ear though I can read the top line, unless there are a lot of sharps. The pastor kept waiting for the one with the talented fingers to arrive but when she didn’t and church began, he asked if there was someone who could take her place. I waited, but no one else volunteered, so finally nodded my head and held up my hand and I was welcomed to the bench. Usually I get nervous playing in front of others and that sometimes makes me goof up. But this time, I aced it all! Years later, I ran into the lady I’d filled in for and she told me that she had gotten down on her knees and prayed for the one who would take her place that morning. Praise the Lord. Prayer works.
