The Cat in the Hat was all the rage as each storyteller turned page after page during Read Across America day in Henry County Schools on Friday, March 1.

   District leaders, board members, and even high school students took part in sharing the importance of and love for reading with students in elementary and middle schools across the district.  Dr. Seuss books were highly popular as the celebration takes place every year in conjunction with the famed author’s birthday.

  Board members and Superintendent Davis made their way to visit classrooms in schools in all parts of the county to lend their support to the district’s strong focus on reading and improving literacy amongst the district’s students.  The interaction of top district officials with students left an impression on our youngest learners.

  District leaders also took part by fanning out across the county to visit as many schools as possible for a fun-filled day of reading.  The interaction of adults with students led to many great conversations about the books being read, the topics shared, and why it is important to read as much as possible.

  Courtney Jones, Henry County Schools’ Director of Early Learning and Innovative Design, knows that this is a day that our schools look forward to for the impact adults reading to students has on our youngest learners.

  “Read Across America day allows us to emphasize the importance of early reading and how it should begin with our youngest learners,” stated Jones. “We believe that the reading health of our future and community rests on the development of our youth. Early reading allows us to provide early access to everything this world has to offer.”

  Timber Ridge Elementary Principal Kristen McRae shared that her school was excited to welcome guests to read to classes throughout the building.   “At Timber Ridge, we firmly believe motivating students to read, and modeling strong literacy habits are keys to becoming lifelong learners,” said McRae.  “Our school experienced great excitement with the visit from special guests and district personnel to surprise our Titans and share their passion for reading.”
