As a Publisher’s Clearing House occasional customer, I get several e-mails from them every day. One of them says that if I do a search using their site, I could possibly become a millionaire. I take their offer, and wonder if maybe that will actually happen. So, what do I search for? Well, I’ve looked up the top used vehicles to buy and of course my Camry makes some of the lists, along with the Toyota Prius, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Ford F150, Dodge Ram and lots more. I searched for the top places to retire in the United States and several towns in Georgia are mentioned, and in one list McDonough is number 36 in the announcement. The website also gives the population, average income and rent payment too. I haven’t looked up the top ten newspapers yet, but the Henry County Times should make that list. Interesting how addicted I am to my printed joys. Love The Week magazine but it no longer comes on Thursday, so I got over that. This week though, my Henry County Times didn’t come until Friday. Then Saturday morning I got up, prepared coffee, set out the breakfast items and took a quick trip to the driveway to get my AJC. And … it’s not there. I sigh, go back inside and finish my morning rituals, and as I’m pouring and stirring, nibbling on my half a breakfast sandwich, I’m checking on the missing publication. Finally I give up, and since it is now 8:30 and delivery time is guaranteed by 8 a.m. I call the number and a robot assures me the replacement will arrive soon. By the way, the AJC is in the top 10 newspapers, which I did look up after mine failed to arrive. I thought it neat that I could click on their address on the bottom and scroll through the newspaper via my laptop. I couldn’t do the crossword puzzle though, so I really do need the paper version of my a.m. joy.
I looked up the ten 10 grocery stores in the USA and Publix is number one. The next top 10 things I looked up was the best places to vacation in America. It turns out Georgia got one mention, and that’s Golden Isles, which includes Brunswick, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island and Little St. Simons Island. Hey! No Tybee Island in the list? Well it was a tad on the crowded side last summer when we took our day trip. The beach was packed, and no more free parking but they still have delicious food all around the island. My favorite hotel was Ocean Plaza but now it’s Hotel Tybee and the prices have gone up a good bit. I still love the memory of staying in their neat concrete block row of rooms which faced the beach. I saw a few of my favorite Florida destinations in this top ten list too. And of course my Disney theme parks along with Epcot made the elite places to visit in the USA. I think my vacation days are over and the only regret I have is that we never made it to Key West to see Jimmy Buffet’s theme restaurants. I didn’t see my bygone Rio Vista on the restaurant list but did see a picture of it on Facebook last week. Very glad to have that neat internet feature and to see former Henry county residents, old dining places, and companies like Dixie Motor. Glad I became a McDonough resident after living in Ola three years and yes, THIS is my NUMBER ONE place to live! Don’t need a top 10 to keep me here.
