Joe Reid wrote, “This is the old Dixie Motors that was located on the West side of the Square around 1950. The building to the left had a unique “hand-powered” elevator to take vehicles up to the shop on the second floor. It was owned by Mr. Bill Pullen and L. P. McKibben. When the new cars were revealed, they handed out “GAS BALLOONS” to all of us kids!” Judy C. Close wrote, “This is the building on the West side of McDonough Square. At one time it was home to Chafin Furniture. Many years prior my great uncle Cloud Russell (1881-1981) had a car dealership in this location. I don’t remember it as I would have been too young when he was there but my mom, who was born in 1922, told me there was an elevator inside to move the cars around from the showroom to the second floor. I believe the elevator was still functional during the time the Chafins had their store.”
