Just as a watering can is used to help life grow, the new Henry County Watering Can Mentoring Program is an initiative to help our teenagers grow in their knowledge, skills, and service to the community. Henry County Parks and Recreation is proud and excited to debut its mentoring program. Registration is open now. The Watering Can Mentoring Program will introduce teenagers to important skills such as small engine maintenance, turf management and carpentry.

“We’re creating the next generation of service-minded leaders,” said Henry County Leisure Services Cluster Lead Jonathon Penn. “Watering Can will help us impart valuable skills and knowledge to the next generation, preparing them to take leadership roles that serve the community.”

The eight-week program will feature one-on-one interaction with maintenance specialists, experienced carpenters, and certified sports turf managers. Students will finish the program by constructing birdhouses and a scorebox at Heritage Park in McDonough.

“We’re creating opportunity for growth in the community,” said Bryan Dixon, Henry County Deputy Administrator of Parks. “We’re committed to our community and care about its future. We want to make sure that the next generation has that same appreciation for the community and what they can do to make it better. Together, we can make a lasting positive impression on Henry County.”

Park Services, a division of Henry County Parks and Recreation, will oversee the program’s implementation. They have developed a comprehensive lesson plan that touches on multiple areas of concentration.

Kimberly Washington, Administrative Assistant at Henry County Parks and Recreation, envisions the Watering Can program as a huge benefit to young people. “The teens in our community will benefit from the life skills being taught,” she said. “The enrichment activities, fields trips, and social interaction will give them opportunities for growth they may not have otherwise had.”

Watering Can begins with an information session on Sunday, June 4 at 7 p.m. and will be held every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at various county parks. Those interested in applying to be part of the program may register at www.hcprd.org. Applicants will be notified of acceptance on Friday, May 30.
