The City of Stockbridge will celebrates Juneteenth with a free music festival scheduled for Monday, June 19 at 3 p.m. at the Stockbridge Amphitheater located at 4650 North Henry Boulevard. The event will include headlining entertainment, food trucks and area vendors. Community members of all ages are encouraged to experience the celebration; though some of the musical acts could be deemed too mature for some audiences. Youth should be accompanied by supervising adults at all times.
The musical festival will feature some legendary performers such as Bobby Rush, Millie Jackson, Lenny Williams, Gerald Alston & the Manhattans, Loose Ends and Rahsaan Patterson. Festival attendees can bring small coolers with food and beverage, including alcohol. Glass containers are not allowed. Concessions will be available for purchase as well. Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of African Americans throughout the United States. The historical celebration originated in Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order Number 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, which proclaimed freedom for African Americans in Texas. In observance of Juneteenth, the City of Stockbridge will close its offices on Monday, June 19. Offices will reopen on the following Tuesday.
