The Locust Grove City Council voted at its May 1 regular meeting to approve a rezoning and three other motions related to a proposed development in the area of Hwy. 42 and Tanger Boulevard.

A 29.6-acre site on the west side of the intersection was rezoned to general commercial, having previously been a mix of office-institutional, residential multi-family and planned development. City staff documents indicated that the purpose of the rezoning was to develop a grocery-anchored shopping center.

Also approved was an amendment to the city’s land use map designation from Office and Medium Density Residential to Community Commercial to allow the development, as well as a variance request to allow for a master sign plan in the same location.

Architectural plans were submitted for The Shops at Indian Creek, to be located on the south side of the highway and west of Tanger Boulevard. The council, acting in its role as the city’s architectural review board, reviewed the proposal and approved it.

In other business, the council approved a new zoning map incorporating map amendments, areas annexed into the city in August of 2016, and new zoning districts. This action was tabled in April when the public hearing revealed several items that needed to be changed or added to the map prior to adoption. Officials said all of those changes have been made.

Final plats were approved for three subdivisions or portions of subdivisions: Cedar Ridge on Tanger Boulevard, 127 lots; Collinswood Phase II on Kirkland Drive, 11 lots; and Bridle Creek Phase 2A on Hwy. 42, six lots.

The council approved an ordinance amending the city code regarding compensation, specifically raising the mayor’s salary from $14,400 to $18,000 annually.

Architectural plans were approved for the proposed remodel of a 4,157-square-foot building at 4971 Bill Gardner Parkway, which will turn an existing IHOP restaurant into a Chase bank. Officials said most of the exterior look will be unchanged except for the A-frame front entry design and brand colors associated with IHOP.

A conditional use request to develop a gravel truck parking lot on an 11-acre site on the south side of Bethlehem Road, west of Hwy. 42, was tabled.
