Leroy Samples
Leroy Samples, age 95, of McDonough, Ga., died Sunday, April 30, 2023 at the Oaks at Eagles Landing. He was born on August 22, 1927 to the late Ernest Willy Samples and Bernice Stella Smallwood Samples. A native of Coweta County, Mr. Samples was employed by Ryder/PIE and drove for them 4.3 million miles over 38 years. After he retired, he continued to travel across the U.S. and Canada with his wife, Gerrie, whom he lovingly called “Sweet Pea.” They made many close friends and enjoyed the camaraderie of other RV enthusiasts. Leroy and Gerrie were avid square dancers. They also played active roles in organizing and leading square dance clubs and events. At age 42, he earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for many years. Leroy was a member of McDonough Christian Church and the Riverdale Masonic Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Geraldine “Gerrie” Couch Samples; his brother, Edward Samples; and his sister, Ann Samples.
He is survived by his children, Ted (Paige) Samples of Cordele, Ga., Kenny (Lisa) Samples of Riverdale, Ga., Pam (Glenn) Gentry of Gay, Ga., Ken (Terri) Furlow of Stockbridge, Ga., Chuck (Joan) Furlow of Locust Grove, Ga., as well as many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service to honor Mr. Samples’ life will take place on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, beginning at 11 a.m. in the West Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Mike Windsor. Entombment with a graveside service will take place at 1:30 p.m. following the service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Ga.
