Henry County Library System (HCLS) now lends Chromebooks to patrons. Henry County residents with a full-access HCLS library card can borrow the portable devices for use in the Library’s branches or other locations. This project was assisted through a grant from the Georgia Public Library Service with federal pandemic funding from the State of Georgia Governor’s Office.
As our society embraces digital connection in new ways, access to computerized systems is essential. Where financial constraints pose a challenge, HCLS is pleased to play a part in removing or reducing such barriers. Patrons with an HCLS library card can borrow Chromebooks for up to two weeks from any of the library’s five branches.
“Having the Chromebooks for circulation in our library system is one way to extend our reach to patrons with an innovative type of access. With universal usability in mind, having current technology available that will not limit a patron to a specific device for their needs is an additional way we can serve our community. This certainly helps our patrons further learn, create and connect on the go.” said Jennifer Parrott, Assistant Director of Collection Development.
The ready-to-use devices have built-in cameras and wireless access, making them ideal for those traveling. Chromebooks are also available for virtual work and study, and patrons will appreciate a simple, hassle-free checkout process. The only obligation for borrowers will be the standard duty of care expected for using and returning the devices.
HCLS actively pursues opportunities to provide resources residents need and in ways that will enable the Library to fulfill its mission in the communities it serves. HCLS is also striving to reshape perceptions of libraries in the digital era. The Chromebook lending service is another step as HCLS forges a path toward positioning itself as a patron-first institution.
As the way people interact, learn, and do business evolves, the goal of the Henry County Library System is to respond with relevant solutions for residents of the County. The Library will remain tuned to local needs by keeping the community as the focal point of its operations.
