Musicians and performers will gather in Stockbridge this month to honor the struggles and triumphs of history.
Henry For Music and the City of Stockbridge will team up for the 12th Annual African-American Heritage Celebration. It is scheduled for February 25 at 4 p.m., at the Merle Manders Conference Center, 111 Davis Road in Stockbridge.
The dinner ceremony will feature speeches, a fashion exhibition and performances by the City of Stockbridge Youth Council, Henry For Music and other local spoken word artists, authors and musicians. Clothing designers, dance artists, and a DJ will also be included in the festivities.
The celebration is a collaboration between Henry For Music and City of Stockbridge. It will be a tribute to “the Divine Nine African American Fraternities and Sororities.”
Flautist, vocalist and composer Kevina Franklin is a program manager at Henry For Music. She will be among the featured performers during the celebration.
Franklin said the celebration highlights Henry For Music’s “diversity, including that of African-American cultures.”
“Henry For Music has a diverse student body, and each of them has openly shared about the tremendous impact of recent and historical events against the humanity of people based on their skin color or association with African-American culture,” said Franklin. “It is our honor to nurture the musicianship of our students while paying homage to their ethnicities, cultures, and Social Emotional Learning.”
Franklin, during the celebration, will team up with Destiny Francis to perform James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”
City of Stockbridge Councilman Alphonso Thomas will host the event.
Thomas said the event is an example of local officials’ collective desire to provide “quality of life services” for residents in the city.
He said the celebration honors fraternities and sororities which partner with him and the City of Stockbridge in administering service projects related to education.
“This celebration is a tribute to black fraternities and sororities, and their commitment to the community,” said Thomas. “They sponsor scholarships and mentoring programs, and they assist in the application process for college.”
