James Luke Mervin is the 2021-2022 Recipient of the Eugene Edwards’ Foundation Scholarship. The foundation honors the legacy of Eugene Edwards who was president of the Henry County Branch NAACP for ten years (National Advancement of Colored People). The foundation awards scholarships through a selective technical school program that advances higher education for academic and community service-driven students.
The Eugene Edwards’ Scholarship was created by the Eugene Edwards’ Foundation, Inc. It awards graduating seniors from Henry County Schools scholarships to assist with furthering their post-secondary education to technical school.
The seniors who are awarded this scholarship exhibit the academic talent, leadership skills, commitment to community service, and exceptional work ethics. These were the characteristics the late Eugene Edwards embodied to uplift the lives of the people and the youth he encountered.
Academic talent, leadership skills, community service and outstanding work ethics are the qualities that make this recipient exceptional. He has volunteered his time with local and community events. He is proactive and makes his academics a priority. He is attending Southern Crescent Technical College. This student’s motto is “Weakness is not a word in my vocabulary.
