During the past three years, members of The Heritage Writers Group (THWG) have published eight new books. Frank Hancock has followed “Who was Uncle Gooney” with another humorous book titled “Pondering.” Frank is also known for his insightful columns in the Henry County Times.
Member Carolyn Haldeman, who taught English at Woodward Academy for thirty years, has produced a delightful rendition of life as an educator, in “The Misadventures of a Septuagenarian Teacher.”
Margaret Chester, current president of the Heritage Writers Group, used her creative talent to change the nature of a family bio by letting past members of her family speak for themselves in her new book, “G’Mama’s Short Stories.” I found it to be a unique and delightful read.
Sharon Davidson, past president of the Heritage Writers Group, has followed her three books with a new one “The Haunting of the Southern Bell.” Sharon also has another in edit, and we look forward to seeing what she has created this time.
For those who like science fiction, Everett Smith has written a strangely interesting series titled Genesis, about how DNA adjusted settlers survive on a distant planet.
Another member, caught by the pandemic, PJ Renfroe, followed “Blue Andromeda” with a new mystery titled “Owl on the Roof,” a murder mystery set in fictional Little River. During that time, she also read what past president of the group, Doctor Michael McLarnon spent his time creating, a new book, “Trading Places” which is still being edited but will be published soon. It is a fascinating twist on relationships and very different from his L’Orange Psychiatric Thriller series.
In this time of continuing pandemic, there needs to be an opportunity for reasonable people to express their thoughts. THWG offers beginners and experienced writers a stage to read three double-spaced pages before a caring group who will sometimes offer gentle editing. This editing may include suggestions on grammar or spelling but always in the spirit of helping to make your writing more readable and interesting. The group also produces an anthology of members’ short stories periodically.
The Heritage Writers Group meets at the McDonough Library and has been meeting and sharing information for eighteen years. We have writers in all genres, even science fiction. Call the McDonough Library at 678-432-5353 ext. 6 for meeting times. The book you have always thought about writing can become a reality.
