It’s going to be a big weekend for McDonough traffic this weekend.
Yes, that can be said about virtually any weekend, but it’s not every day that a bridge over I-75 is closed.
In preparation for the transfer to a diverging diamond pattern interchange, Georgia Department of Transportation officials have announced that the Hwy. 20/81 bridge at Exit 218 is scheduled to be closed June 24-27. The Henry County Police Department posted a notice about the closure this week on its Facebook page.
Should any changes in the schedule occur, GDOT officials will provide updated information. Detour instructions for travel in both directions are being posted.
That is not the only spot in Henry County where GDOT is working right now. The department announced June 16 that teams from its Quick Response program are getting ready to start a new project at the intersection of Hwy. 138 and North Moseley Drive, within walking distance of the Woodland school complex.
According to GDOT officials crews from Piedmont Paving will be installing a newer and much larger roundabout to accommodate the ongoing traffic. Work is scheduled throughout the summer and should be completed before school resumes in the fall.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones such as these. Before heading out, citizens can get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions by phoning 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app.
In a separate GDOT announcement released June 14, a Quick Response team recently paved the right turn lane and striping at Hwy. 42 and John Williams Parkway, which officials said will help with traffic flow.
According to the GDOT website, the Quick Response Project Program consists of operational projects such as restriping, intersection improvements, turn lane additions and extensions that can be implemented in a short period of time (total timeframe of 3-4 months) and for under $200,000.
