Champion speller Ananya Augustine is wrapping up an incredible run with a final shot at a national title next week.

The Eagle’s Landing Middle School eighth-grader is competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 29-June 2 in National Harbor, Md. She reached the national semifinals last year and finished the competition tied for 21st.

Augustine has won the Henry County spelling bee every year she was eligible, beginning with back-to-back wins as a fourth-grader at Hickory Flat Elementary. As a middle schooler she was state runner-up in 2020 before winning the state crown last year.

More than 200 spellers will meet in Maryland to vie for the 2022 crown. They are divided into groups of 40 for the preliminary round, with Augustine’s group competing the morning of May 31.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for the morning of June 1 with the semifinals that afternoon. The finals are the evening o June 2.

Both the semifinals and finals are to be televised on the ION and Bounce cable networks.

The national winner will receive $50,000 in cash in addition to other prizes.

According to her bio provided by the Scripps National Spelling Bee organizers, Augustine’s favorite television show is the Japanese anime series “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” with another Japanese series, “Nana,” is a close second.
