Dear Editor,
Don Lemon is a man I have never before heard of until today, while watching “The View” on TV. He was the guest on the daily program, which consists of five women and a guest, Whoopi, Joy, Sara, Sunny and Meaghan. Whoopi hosts the show, but everyone contributes. Four women are Democrats and one is a Republican. All are highly educated, up-to-the-minute women, knowledgeable about subjects of interest to the majority of people. Today’s subject was Don Lemon and his new book, which I have not read, but hope to secure soon, “This is the new fire.”
I can’t begin to impart to anyone the feelings this young black man left me with when the program ended. Quietness, sincerity, intelligence and especially HOPE. His book, as I understand it, concerns black history in America, and his feelings about it as a God-loving person. He told the story of learning to read as a very young boy, and gradually, as he progressed, teaching his grandmother, who had never had the opportunity to learn. This is only a small part of the story, because he spoke mostly about people trying to learn more about each other, learning to appreciate the differences in each other, learning to be neighbors and eventually friends. He even mentioned God in such a matter-of-fact way that I truly believe he has something most all of us, as Christians, wish we had: a close relationship with our Father.
And of course, segregation came into the conversation in a way I have never really considered. The most segregated places in our Country are the Church pews! This is Don’s view, and I agree.
Can we not correct this? Can we not respect another person for what he or she is? What difference does race or religion truly make? It’s the character and attitude that makes a person worth knowing. I believe we can do it!
As President Biden said recently, “It’s never a good bet, to bet against the American people.” Yes, we can do it!
