Piedmont Henry Hospital’s wound care department recently reopened their Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) treatment program.

HBOT is an adjunctive treatment in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while enclosed in a pressurized chamber at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The hospital recently completed an expansion of their oxygen farm which provides the capacity to care for all patients and support this program. While breathing pure oxygen, the patient’s blood plasma becomes saturated and carries 15-20 times the normal amount of oxygen to the body’s tissue while under barometric pressure. HBOT is known to reduce swelling, promote healing, and build and repair blood vessels, as well as increase white blood cell production to help patients fight off infection.

“Our wound care program is vital to the care of many people in the community and we’re excited to be able to re-introduce the HBOT program which has been beneficial to so many patients,” said James Atkins, Piedmont Henry’s Chief Operating Officer.

Hyperbaric therapy, which is an outpatient procedure at Piedmont Henry, has healing effects for numerous medical conditions including diabetic foot wounds, delayed radiation injury, crush injury, and more.

HBOT appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
