Sarah Mulkey Cowan of Stockbridge celebrated her 90th birthday on Sunday, September 27 at a “Drive Through” event at Hemphill Presbyterian Church. A steady line of cars filled with friends and family entered one driveway, giving Sarah their birthday wishes, cards and gifts, then circled around the church and exited the other driveway. The event was planned by her three daughters, son-in-laws, six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Sarah was born in Canton, Ga. on October, 2, 1930. She moved with her family to Lakewood Heights, in her mid teens. She met her husband Thomas Cowan when they both appeared in the play “Dear Ruth” that was raising money for a local boy’s club. In the play she was the girlfriend of Thomas, an army sergeant, and the two fell in love and later got married. Sarah had aspirations to be on the stage someday and actually was in 1948.
