All ten members of Henry County’s legislative delegation emerged as primary winners in their re-election bids, either by being unopposed or winning without the need for a runoff.
Both candidates for State Senate District 10 were Democrats, and incumbent Emanuel Jones won easily with nearly 73 percent of the vote. In District 17, Republican incumbent Brian Strickland and Democrat challenger Kelly Rose faced no primary opposition.
Three contested races for State House seats were decided in the primary, and all were won by an incumbent Democrat. Demetrius Douglas in District 78 and Pam Stephenson in District 90 each bested two challengers by getting more than 65 percent of the vote. El-Mahdi Holly had a much tighter contest in District 111, winning with 50.9 percent against Tarji Leonard Dunn. Holly’s district is only one in either the House of Senate that lies solely within Henry County.
Four other races had one candidate from each party, meaning an easy primary win and a showdown in November: Republican Karen Mathiak against Democrat William Harris in District 73; Republican Dale Rutledge against Democrat Regina Lewis-Ward in District 109; Republican Clint Crowe against Democrat Ebony Carter in District 110; and Republican David Knight against Democrat Sheila Henley in District 130.
Mathiak, Rutledge and Knight are incumbents. Andy Welch chose not to run for re-election in District 110.
Democrat incumbent Sandra Givens Scott in District 76 is unopposed in both the primary and general elections.
