Dear Editor,

I am responding to your editorial ‘Labor of Love’ in the previous issue. For 40 years I worked in print media on the national level. In 2011 I was one of many to lose my job because we were unable to compete with electronic publishing (the articles you read on the internet).

To work for most publications you need a certain degree of experience and journalistic integrity. This is not necessarily a requirement for the internet. Anyone can have a blog or website and print whatever they want to without needing editorial approval. A single person can publish worldwide at the touch of the enter key.

But print media has offices, employees, printing costs, paper costs, distribution costs, newsstand rack costs, and other expenses. The employees at The Times even work on their day off to load their cars and deliver the paper for our enjoyment. Publications are real companies that provide jobs to people and serve the community.

I write a column, called the Casual Observer for The Henry County Times and I do this because I feel it contributes to our community. Many towns are not lucky enough to have a newspaper, especially one of this quality.

I strongly urge local businesses to help our community by advertising in The Times and not only keep our hometown paper going but help it grow and bring more features and articles to Henry County.

Rob DeMarco,

McDonough
