In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us anything about the photo shown above, use this form. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send us.
It looks like we stumped you this week. This photo was originally published in the September 28, 2005 edition of the Times.
In that edition, Times reader Glen Murphy wrote in to tell us this picture “is from the intersection of I-75 and Hwy. 20 /Hampton Road. It is associated with a convenience store. I think it was called Mini Mart. It was beside the old steak house, I forget the name. Across the street was a Shell gas station and a breakfast and lunch place called Granny’s. I was only around 10 years old at the time, but looking back, those were some good times. No traffic, you knew everybody in town. I used to complain about living in a one horse town, but I would go back to that now any day!”
This is the view from Mr. Field’s gas station across the street from the Sloan Hayes house. My dad, T.W. Cleveland, set up a gas charge account with Mr. Field’s so I could charge gas there. I could fill up my care for $5. Mr. Robinson had a towing service, garage and gas station at his location. Mr. Fields just had a gas station. Those were the good old days! I miss the small town living from that period of time.
The April 22 issue featured a photo
Of Pete Robinson’s Tire and Wrecker Service. He also had a gentleman that helped him (Garfield I think what was folks called him). If your car broke down or you got stuck in the infield of Atlanta Motor Speedway, one of them would tow you out and you could pay them later!
