Proposed school calendars for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years have been released for public review by the Henry County Board of Education. Each one calls for 178 school days as well as five or more teacher workdays throughout the year. In both cases, the first day of classes would be the first Wednesday of August and the school year would end for students the Friday before Memorial Day.

As in past years, the schedule included a break week in September as well as the entire week of Thanksgiving, along with two weeks off between semesters over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. School would be dismissed the entire week of Presidents Day in February and spring break would be in April. The board is expected to take action on the calendars on April 20.

In other business, the board voted to grant a temporary construction easement to an existing sewer line easement on the property of Ola Elementary School, a move that will help provide sewer availability for a new Publix shopping center south of the school. After the tie-in is complete, a new general sewer line easement will take the place of the existing easement, according to officials.

The board also approved a $351,520.68 expenditure for a network equipment upgrade officials said that will replace aging network equipment in school data closets supporting school-wide network connectivity. It is the out of pocket non-e-Rate eligible portion of the total $2 million-plus cost of the upgrade.

The board voted in favor of a resolution signaling approval of its new Georgia Department of Education five-year local facilities plan. According to officials, the plan has been updated to include current floor plan conditions for each school, FTE projections/adjustments, inventory summary, system needs, and available state funds for renovations and modifications.

The board also approved a partnership with the Georgia Center for Assessment regarding various subjects in grades 4-8 and the county’s own assessment system.

Board member Annette Edwards was appointed by her peers to be their delegate to the Georgia School Board Association Delegate Assembly this June in Savannah.
