 Phyetta Fae Craver Fitzgerald

Mrs. Phyetta Fae Craver Fitzgerald passed away quietly on Monday February 10, 2020. She was 95 years old, born April 25, 1924, the fourth of seven children. A past resident of Mifflinville, Pa., Shreveport La., Erlanger Ky., Forest Park and Stockbridge Georgia, she was married to the late John A. Fitzgerald in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on April 21, 1945. She grew up in Mifflin, Pennsylvania on a farm outside the town. She used to talk about how hard life was on the farm in her early childhood years and even harder after her father died when she was only 13 years old. Harder again, as she remembers vividly, when the Army came to tell her mother of her older brothers’ death in WWII. She graduated from Mifflin High School and after marrying and having given birth to the first of 5 children, moved to Erlanger, Ky., when her husband began employment with Delta Air Lines. In Erlanger, she would give birth to three children, whom with all her children, made sure they began life in faith at Erlanger Baptist Church. In 1961, moving to Forest Park Ga., with her husband who was transferred to Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, she gave birth to her fifth child and as a member of Second Baptist, Ash Street Baptist churches in Forest Park, Conley Baptist in Conley and Salem Baptist Church in McDonough at various periods, was active in the adult choirs and women’s organizations. Some of her favorite hobbies were knitting, crocheting, which she would often playingly pronounce “crotch-eting” instead of “cro-cheting,” and quilting.  After her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling in their RV often doing so with family and friends. At each state they visited they acquired souvenir glasses for their grandkids. She always regretted not being able to visit Alaska as that was the only state, they did not visit to add to the glass collections. For most of the last years succeeding her husband’s passing, her life became harder as she aged, ultimately becoming bedridden and unable to walk after falling and breaking her back. She is preceded in death by her husband John, her parents Laura and Benjamin Craver, her older sister Edna Shoemaker and brothers Harold Craver, Claude Craver, and Charles.

She is survived by her 5 children- son John Fitzgerald and daughter-in-law Lucy – Milbrook, Ala., son Randy Fitzgerald and daughter-in-law Carol –  Fayetteville, Ga., daughters Joetta Johnson and Linda Fitzgerald –  McDonough, Ga., son Danny Fitzgerald and daughter in law Kristin McDonough, sister Thelma Ilhardt, Cincinnati Ohio., niece Dawnita Forey, Brevard, N.C., nephews, Elwood Shoemaker and wife Jan, Hendersonville, Ga., and James and John (Mary) Ilhardt, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and grand nieces and nephews.
