Judy Close wrote, “I believe this is a painting of Marion Hall Simpson’s vegetable and fruit stand at the old mill on the corner of Keys Ferry and Cleveland Streets in McDonough. I lived across the street in the Stroud House in the early 80s and would stop by to say hi when I was walking my Doberman puppy, Copper. I delighted in chatting with him – such a nice man and full of wit, humor and knowledge. He was a few years behind my mom (Virginia Bryans) in school and I loved hearing his stories of when they were all youngsters. I remember the store had wonderful fresh, locally grown produce and a sawdust floor. It reminded me of the McDonough of my youth. I don’t remember when it was torn down to make room for ‘progress’ but it was sad for many of us when it was no longer there.”
Kathy Regenold wrote, “this painting shows Mr. and Mrs. Simpson at their Simpson’s Mill store. They were such loving people, and are greatly missed.” Thanks also to Benny Lawrence and David Bledsoe for correctly identifying this painting.
