The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its January 21 regular meeting to reappoint county clerk Stephanie Braun and also set qualifying fees for 2020 county elections.

Braun’s appointment for the new year, as well as Anne Franklin’s appointment to the Library Board to fill an unexpired term that will end December 31, both passed with a 5-0 vote (Vivian Thomas was absent from the meeting).

Qualifying fees for elected county offices were set at 3 percent of the base salary for each elected position, as required by state law. The fees must be set no later than February 1 in any year that includes a general primary, nonpartisan election or general election, according to the law.

In other business, the board approved a resolution requesting approval for a five-year agreement between Axon Enterprises Inc. and Henry County Police Department for the purchase of 176 Taser 7 electronic control devices to include all necessary support, training and equipment.

The first year’s purchase will be funded by Allocated Funds account ($81,312) and the Seized Funds Account ($19,687.52). The remaining years will be funded through the normal allocations process.

The HCPD has been using ECDs or tasers since 2006. This agreement would be through the 2025 fiscal year, according to a county staff report.

The cost for the first year comes out to $101,920.40 and the other years are $133,851.52 each. The total amount for five years is $636,405.60.

Also approved was a resolution approving the Georgia Department of Transportation’s acquisition of five pieces of property along Hwy. 20 owned by the county at a total cost of $1,142,605. This action is necessary for the state DOT to acquire the needed right of way and easements for the widening of Hwy. 20 from I-75 to Phillips Drive. The properties include land directly across from Prity Court and International Avenue as well as near the intersection with McDonough Parkway. The resolution was approved 5-0.
