On Thursday, December 12, the Community Gardens of Henry County put on their annual Senior Luncheon at the Henry County Cooperative Extension Center.
The event began about 12 years ago as a picnic lunch, but was later transformed into a Christmas lunch for seniors all over Henry County.
The luncheon usually serves between 100 to 150 people.
Local performers for the luncheon included the Singing Cowboy, Lamar Wilson; Laura Worthingham, who played Christmas songs on the flute; and the Heritage Choir.
Organizations in the local community work with the Community Gardens of Henry County to make this event possible. Donations for the luncheon are made from Publix and In His Name Food Pantry. The Community Gardens of Henry County gives back to those organizations throughout the year by donating fresh vegetables that are grown in their gardens.
“We are giving back something to our Henry County community. Our organization is a charity organization. We are doing it out of love for gardening. I have been dealing with the luncheon since day one and I just enjoy doing it. It could never have been done by myself,” said Stephanie Tansey, Community Gardens of Henry County board member. “We have food delivered and donated and we pay to get it catered, since the event has gotten so big. The seniors love coming and we try to give them a happy time. We have a lot of widows and widowers and this lunch gives them something to look forward to and they come every year.”
