Henry County As It Was

In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us anything about the photo shown above, use this form. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send us.

Julie Rowland wrote, “this photo was taken during the 1970’s at Rowland’s General Store at the corner of Hwy. 155 N. and Eastlake Pkwy. This store was owned by my husband’s (Greg Rowland) family. The store was run by James “Jimmy” Rowland at the time. The black truck that is sitting out front is still running and owned by our family today. Many of the old timers would come into the store to purchase their general goods and, over time, it became the location of Rowland’s Diner, where many locals would come for breakfast and lunch. Today, you will see the Original Shane’s Rib Shack at this location.”

Marie Thomas wrote, “this appears to be Rowland’s General Store located on the corner of Hwy. 155 and East Lake Road, now occupied by Shane’s. When I moved off East Lake Road in 1995, this was the last commercial property going out of East Lake Road into rural Henry County. It was a morning gathering place for all the old timers for coffee and friendly chats.” Bill Melton also correctly identified the photograph. Thanks to everyone for writing in with their guesses.
