For aspiring singers hoping to get noticed, that elusive big break may be just around the corner.
Peachtree Peddlers Flea Market and Antique Centre, at 155 Mill Road in McDonough, will host the inaugural Peddlers Idol contest, beginning September 7 in the facility’s Music Hall. The 13-week competition will be held on Saturdays from 11 a.m., to 2 p.m., and will culminate with the finals on December 13.
The competition will kick off with audition rounds, in which participants will attempt to capture the attention of a panel of judges, who select the most impressive talent from each round. The grand-prize winner will be crowned as the Peddlers Idol.
Joe Weiland is the general manager at Peachtree Peddlers, which has been in business more than 25 years in McDonough. Weiland said the goal of the contest, designed for singers ages 16 and up, is “showcasing local talent in the music industry and helping people advance their careers in the music industry if they so choose.”
There is no entry fee for the contest. Weiland said he hopes to make the competition an annual event for aspiring singers in the area.
“We’ve got over 100 contestants, so far, signed up,” he said. “I expect an additional 100 by the end of the contest.”
More than $10,000 worth in prizes will be on the line during the contest. Weiland said contestants will be vying for studio time and other opportunities in their quests to make it big in the music world.
“A lot of the awards are focused on helping people advance their careers in the music industry,” he said. “I’m really excited about the number of contestants we have so far. It’s been really brisk.”
Weiland added that the beginning of the contest will be concurrent with the rollout of the Peddlers Music Hall. The new venue’s launch, he said, is dedicated to public relations and related events.
