Henry County Stockbridge VFW Post 12180 is supporting a trio of programs to recognize local students and teachers.
Patriot’s Pen is an essay-writing competition for students in sixth through eighth grades, while the Voice of Democracy competition is geared toward students in ninth through 12th grades. The theme of both contests is “What Makes America Great.”
Patriot’s Pen essays must be printed or typed, and Voice of Democracy essays must be typed and must include a head-and-shoulder photo. The deadline to submit entries to a VFW Henry County representative, for both competitions, is October 1.
The Teacher of the Year Smart/Maher Citizenship Education award recognizes elementary, junior high, and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics. Nominees must teach at least half of the school day in a classroom environment, and promote America’s history, traditions, and institutions effectively.
Nominations may be submitted by fellow teachers, supervisors, or other interested individuals. Self-nominees are not eligible. The deadline to submit an entry to a VFW Henry County representative is October 1.
