Speed limit changes on a few selected Henry County roads are now official.

A list of roadways and assigned speed limits recently certified by the Georgia Department of Transportation was reviewed by the county’s DOT before being approved by a vote of the Board of Commissioners at its Aug. 6 regular meeting. Commission approval was required before law enforcement could be allowed to run radar on those roadways.

New or updated speed limit designations include:

  • Honey Creek Road from North Ola Road to Snapping Shoals Road, 1.77 miles, 45 mph.
  • McDonough Parkway from 20/81 to Bridges Road, 0.56 miles, 35 mph.
  • North Moseley Road, school zone.
  • Tunis Road, school zone.
  • Avalon Parkway from 155 to 20, 1.6 miles, 45 mph.
  • Lester Mill Road to include Bethlehem Road to Bill Gardner Pkwy., 1.70 miles, 45 mph.
  • Moseley Drive, updated length 0.75 miles, 35 mph.
  • Moseley Road, updated length 2.2 miles, 35 mph.
  • New Morn Drive from 81 to Mt Carmel Road, 1.66, 45 mph.
  • Hwy. 20 from Sutton Drive to 50 feet east of Parker Road (east city limits of McDonough), 1.10 miles, 50 mph.

In other business, the board approved the qualifying fee for this fall’s special election to fill the unexpired term of former county tax commissioner David Curry, who began in May as the head of the Georgia Department of Revenue. His deputy in the county office, Michael Harris, has assumed the tax commissioner role as permitted by state law until the special election. Curry’s term was to expire at the end of 2020.

The fee is set at three percent of the lowest possible salary for the position under Georgia law. In this case, that amounts to $2,533.76. Qualifying for the special election is the final week of August.
